Why Hips Matter

Freedom Foster-Grady | JAN 19

Hello Lovelies! This week we will be doing 6 movements targeting our hips and glutes.

Did you know that your hips/ glutes are the muscles that have the largest impact on our bodies long term health? Hip's and glutes hold a unique position in the body, as they interact and connect our upper body/ torso with our lower body/ legs.

The hips and glutes help translate the forces of movement from our legs, to our core, spines and arms! The reverse is also true. The hips and glutes are also primary movers in many movements involving our legs and spine. Also, they act as stabilizer muscles for our whole body and are integral to keeping balanced.

As such the hips and glutes are our muscles involved in the widest range of movements our body does day to day.

Can you guess a common activity we all do day to day that can significantly reduce the capacities of our glutes and hips? If your guess was sitting you'd be right! Sitting, with our front hips at about a 90 degrees, our low back rounded out and our knees above our hips does a number to these crucial muscles. Occupational and recreational sitting causes our most dynamic muscles to become weak and tight. The consequences of which ripple through much of our bodies movements.

The following are 6 1-3 minute movements that strengthens, stretches and mobilizes our hips and glutes! Keep up with them and you will see how taking care of our hips and glutes leads to a better quality of bodily life over your lifespan!
